- There are many practical scenarios where mild steel is corroded in the presence of both seawater and inert particles, such as sand or coal. Corrosion under these conditions is a form of under-deposit corrosion, with the rate and extent of corrosion a function of the degree of burial. This paper presents experimental work aimed at studying this behaviour. Mild steel coupons were buried in sands (either completely, partially or not buried) and immersed in seawater for up to 1 year. Completely buried coupons displayed the least corrosion, presumably due to a decrease in oxygen availability to the metal surface. Settling of marine sediments next to the surface of the partially buried coupons provided conditions for crevice corrosion. The progression of corrosion pit depths and mass loss with time are consistent with the initial stages of the bi-modal trend for steel corrosion.
